Standard 5.9 Evaluation of Faculty

Annual Faculty Evaluation Process

The university requires an annual evaluation process to ensure faculty meet departmental bylaws and performance expectations. Faculty must submit a narrative document outlining their achievements in teaching, scholarship, and service, accompanied by supporting documentation. These evaluations are reviewed by a departmental faculty committee and the department head, who also serves as the Associate Dean of Clinical Sciences.

Staff Evaluation Process

Staff are evaluated annually by the Associate Dean of Clinical Sciences. After the evaluation, staff meet with the Associate Dean to discuss their performance and recommendations for the upcoming year.

Student Feedback in Evaluations

Student course evaluations and advising feedback are integral to faculty evaluations, providing insights into the program's effectiveness. Additionally, the program director conducts exit interviews with students who graduate or leave the program.

Methods for Faculty Performance Assessment

Faculty performance is verified using multiple methods, including:

  • Student evaluations
  • Course outcomes
  • Peer reviews of teaching
  • A Faculty Evaluation Committee, composed of multiple members, provides input into faculty evaluations.

Evaluation and Grievance Procedures

All faculty and staff follow NMU’s evaluation process outlined in union contracts. Each union contract includes grievance procedures to address concerns or disputes.

Program Oversight by the Program Director

The program director monitors program delivery to ensure compliance with NMU’s graduate admission policies, academic standards, and Graduate Education and Research program requirements. This process ensures that program outcomes meet the standards of graduate studies.
