Standard 4.6 Student Advising
Standard 4.6 Student Advising
Advising Structure
Students receive regular advising on both academic and clinical progress. Graduate faculty serve as academic advisors, and students must meet with their
assigned advisor at least once per semester. Prior to advising students, graduate faculty will receive advisor training. An initial advising session is
required during the first few weeks of the program to establish a plan of
study.
The Director of Clinical Education provides clinical advising each semester, focusing on clinical progress. Advising sessions conducted by the graduate faculty and the Director of Clinical Education are documented in the Educational Success Platform (ESP), and Knowledge and Skills Acquisition is tracked through CALIPSO.
Advising Tools and Oversight. The ESP system is used by full-time NMU faculty to monitor advisee progress, schedule meetings, and document advising interactions. Faculty and supervisors can document concerns in ESP and CALIPSO and notify students when issues arise.
The Director of Clinical Education will meet with students to address clinical concerns and conduct off-campus clinical site visits once per semester to ensure quality oversight of clinical placements.
Grade Requirements and Language Proficiency. Students must achieve a grade of B- or higher in all courses. If a grade below a B- is earned, the course must be repeated, and an intervention plan will be developed. Failure to achieve a B- or higher upon repeating may result in dismissal from the program.
Language proficiency is assessed during admissions through application materials, interviews, and a handwritten writing sample. Non-native English speakers must meet the required TOEFL scores before admission. An intervention plan will be developed if language proficiency concerns arise during the program. Failure to meet the plan’s goals may result in dismissal.
Student Conduct. Students are expected to adhere to policies outlined in the Graduate Catalog, NMU Student Handbook, and the MS-SLP Handbook of Academic Policies and Procedures, including those addressing academic integrity and ethical behavior.
