Standard 3.1B Curriculum Sufficiency in Speech-Language Pathology – Overall Program
The MS-SLP program offers a curriculum leading to a Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology. This six semester degree requires the completion of 59 credits for the non-thesis track and 65 credits for the thesis track. The academic and clinical program is offered on a regular basis so that students are able to satisfy degree and other requirements within the program’s timeframe.The mission of this program is to develop each student into an effective and caring clinician who uses a blend of evidence-based clinical knowledge and creativity to enhance the unique communication and swallowing skills of clients. This program will promote a commitment to lifelong learning in the professional development of its students.
The curriculum ensures that students acquire knowledge regarding disorders and their evaluation and treatment in order to be effective in their practice. Courses emphasize the evidence-base needed for effective clinical skills. In addition, interpersonal skills are enhanced by group and presentation activities and are discussed in courses and in practica. The on-campus clinic will emphasize and offer the opportunity to practice interpersonal skills needed for the profession. The need for ongoing learning as a professional is discussed throughout the curriculum. It will be emphasized that university provides the foundation for clinical knowledge and skills but that on-the-job experience will advance and hone that knowledge and that professional development is required throughout the career as clinical treatments change and advance.
Professional Practice Competencies - Emphasis and Assessment
The program ensures students develop essential competencies for professional practice through integrated coursework and clinical practica. Knowledge and Skills are assessed using formative and summative methods, including the KASA form. Emphasis is placed on accountability, integrity, effective communication, evidence-based practice, and cultural competence, with these principles embedded throughout the curriculum and reinforced during clinical experiences. Students engage in self-reflection, ethical practice, and collaborative interprofessional activities while addressing client-centered care and professional duties. This comprehensive approach prepares students to meet rigorous standards and excel in the field of speech-language pathology.
